The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) has asked school heads not to send students home for fees and instead talk with parents on payment.

Bomet Branch David Mitei says sending students home affects learning activities and exposes them to dangers hence should be discouraged.

Speaking in Bomet town, he urged parents to accompany their children to school especially those in far-away schools, noting that children’s safety should be given priority.

“Parents are now grappling with economic hardships. As a union, we would like to ask school heads not to send students home for fees and instead talk with parents on ways of payment,” he said.

Concerning Grade 9 classrooms, Mitei pointed out that teachers whose schools have not completed the classrooms have been directed to find ways of ensuring learning runs smoothly.

“The government has constructed Grade 9 classrooms in our schools and this is encouraging. We have however asked teachers in schools where classrooms are incomplete to find ways of ensuring learning run smoothly,” added Mitei.

Meanwhile, Rongai MP Paul Chebor has observed that some 25 new Grade 9 classrooms have been completed in the area, promising to do everything to ensure learning activities run smoothly.

Chebor however acknowledged understaffing in public schools, but assured hiring will continue to address the shortage.

A spot check at some schools in the South Rift region established that Grade 9 classrooms at the schools are at various levels of completion, with parents demanding the speedy completion of the classrooms.
