KNQA holds stakeholders forum to discuss validation of National Policy Framework

Kenya National Qualifications Authority (KNQA) Director General Dr Alice Kande has underscored the importance of a National Policy Framework on accreditation and registration in the country.

Dr Kande while speaking during the opening ceremony of the wider stakeholders Validation of the National Policy Framework on Monday, May 13 at the Kyaka Hotel, Machakos County, said the policy aims to harmonise the all entities involved in the accreditation system of national qualifications, fostering a seamless accreditation value chain that ensures qualifications meet the highest quality standards.

“The Kenya National Qualifications Authority (KNQA) assumes the overarching regulatory role within the qualifications system, bringing together institutions that award qualifications, both within and outside the education and training sectors,” said Dr Kande adding that stakeholders should ensure that the development process of a qualification and its regulatory channels are harmonised and clear.

The Director General noted that KNQA’s role is akin to a nurturing parent, ensuring the well-being and harmonious development of all components within the qualifications ecosystem and ensure that the Policy document has the voice of wider stakeholders within and outside education and training.

“Reforms are underway in the education and training sector, including reviewing the KNQF Act and other related acts, to streamline operations and eliminate overlapping mandates among regulatory bodies ensuring seamless accreditation process.

In TVET, stakeholders across sectors are collaborating to harmonise National Occupational Standards to develop competency-based curricula aligned with industry demands,” said Dr Kande.

She appreciated the International Labour Organization (ILO) for providing support and guidance throughout the endeavor for the policy and others including the Kenya Credit Accumulation and Transfer System (KCATs), Quality Assurance among others.

“The establishment of the Kenya National Learners Records Database will govern the registration process for awarding institutions and their qualifications, and establish a comprehensive database of national qualifications to combat fraudulent certifications,” said Dr Kande.

Dr Kande added that the policy framework aims to bring together all entities in the qualifications landscape to ensure quality assured qualifications to produce qualifications that meet industry needs and are nationally and internationally recognised.

The event was presided over by John Tuwei, Deputy Director TVET who represented Principal Secretary State Department for TVET Dr Esther Muoria.

The stakeholders who were drawn from Basic Education, tertiary and University and research include Directorate of Quality Assurance (DQAS), Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD), Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC), State Department for TVET, TVETA, TVET CDACC, KIMC,RTI, Mount Kenya University, University of Nairobi among others welcomes the development of the policy.
