Kisumu set to get a new Ksh70M girls school to meet demand

Kisumu Central MP Dr Joshua Oron breaks the ground for the construction of a girls school at Union Primary School.

The stage is now set for the construction of a new girls secondary school  in Kisumu Central at a cost of  Ksh70 million to meet the growing need.

The school to be built at Kisumu Union Primary School grounds follows public demand for a girls’ day school to complement the existing secondary schools in the city.

Kisumu Central MP Dr Joshua Oron said they have already tendered for the construction of the new school and work is to start any time soon.

Speaking during the ground breaking ceremony for the new learning institution, Oron said there are fourteen secondary schools within the city.

“But of the number, only two are for girls, which are not able to accommodate the growing demand for girls’ education,” he said.

The two girls’ schools are Kisumu Girls National School and St Theresa Girls’ Secondary School. However, given that one is a national school, those who cannot make the grade opt for St Theresa’s.

The MP disclosed that they have set aside Ksh12 million for the first phase of the project, which will immediately begin upon completion of the tendering process which is going on.

The Mp also disclosed that plans are afoot to build a new boys secondary school in Kanyakwar village for Ksh13 million.

“We will build 6 classrooms, an administration block, a science laboratory and a dining hall,” said Oron.
