The County Government of Kisumu has disbursed scholarships worth Ksh51,250,000 to some 1,050 students as 350 more remain on the waiting list.

According to the county governor Prof Anyang’ Nyong’o, the amount is part payment for the Financial Year 2023/2024.

During disbursements done on his behalf by his deputy Dr Mathew Owili, Nyong’o said they have been consistent in funding education.

“We only skipped the 2019/2020 financial year due to the Covid-19 crisis,” he recounted, saying the total amount they have processed since 2017 is Ksh308,245,862 as scholarships to 2,310 students and Ksh723,847,841 in bursaries to over 78,572 successful applicants.

Dr Owili speaks during the distribution exercise.

“We have helped thousands of students and we are going for more needy but bright children,” he said.

The governor congratulated staff in the Department of Education, Technical Training, Innovation and Social Services led by John Awiti for a job well done, pointing out that they have been focussed and consistent in the preparation and distribution of these funds.

The governor commended Equity Bank for its popular Wings to Fly programme, the Cooperative Bank, the Kenya Commercial bank, and the Jomo Kenyatta Foundation, among many others, for their generous funding.

Beneficiaries appreciate the gesture from the county government.

To ensure transparency and accountability and reduce complaints, he said, they established County and Ward Education Bursary and Scholarship committees which have done a commendable job.

He said school principals should respect the contribution by promptly acknowledging and giving receipts to the department, even as the beneficiaries ensure that compliance documents, including school report forms, fee structures, academic transcripts, fee statements are given in good time.
