Kisii Hospital halts teachers’ services over payment issues

The Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital (KTRH) has allegedly suspended medical services for teachers due to unpaid bills.

The teachers’ medical cover is managed by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).

Joseph Mogire Abincha, the Executive Secretary of the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) Kisii Branch, confirmed that this suspension took effect on Monday, January 27, 2025.

He noted that the delays in payment from TSC have led to this situation.

The National Treasury has faced criticism for not releasing the funds needed by TSC for the annual medical scheme, leaving teachers without access to necessary medical services.

As a result, there has been a slowdown in services at the facility, and there is a shortage of essential medications.

“We understand the inconvenience this may cause, and we kindly ask for your patience as we work diligently to resolve this matter as soon as possible.

Rest assured, we are actively communicating with all relevant parties to ensure a swift resolution,” Mogire stated.

He added that many service providers are also experiencing delays due to outstanding payments, but they have engaged with these providers to encourage continued service during this time.

“As a branch, we have informed all parties involved to ensure that normalcy returns as quickly as possible, because the health of our members cannot be compromised,” Mogire emphasized.

In light of this situation, KUPPET members are encouraged to seek services from other providers while the union works to resolve the issue.
