Kisii parents want safety crackdown by MoE extended to high schools

Basic Education Principal Secretary, Dr. Belio Kipsang'.

Parents in Kisii county have praised the Ministry of Education for shutting down boarding schools that were found unworthy to accommodate learners.

Speaking to Education News today morning, they asked the government to extend the operation to boarding secondary schools, whose boarding facilities they said were operating in worse hygienic conditions that pose health threats to students.

“This is a good step because most private owners were using these facilities to extort extra money from parents,” said Anne Biyaki, one of the parents.

According to a circular from the Ministry of Education, 348 boarding sections in primary schools across the country have been closed.

Among these, 17 are from Kisii county and include River Bank Academy, St. Anne Metaburo in Etago sub-county and Tabaka Girls.

Others are St. Angela’s Precious Hope School, Mwata School for the Deaf, St. Reuben Young and St. Peters Kisii among others.

The closure follows the Ministry’s assessment report that was carried out in the months of September and October.

In the letter signed by Basic Education PS Dr. Belio Kipsang’, all County Directors of Education were asked to implant the closure decree immediately.

“The purpose of this circular is therefore to direct you to close down the boarding section of all schools within your jurisdiction to that were not approved as per the attached list,” read part of the letter.

Regional Directors of Education and their assistants were asked to inform parents of pupils in affected schools early enough to enable them to seek transfers to other schools.
