Kisii leaders throng the burial of celebrated Prof Bogonko

Elected leaders from Kisii County were among thousands of mourners who gathered in Matongo village in Kitutu Chache North for the burial of Prof Stephen Sorobea Nyachio Bogonko.

The acclaimed scholar passed on two weeks ago after a long illness.

Former Governor James Ongwae who led other mourners termed the late professor a trailblazer who reshaped higher education in the country as he inspired many students to venture into diverse courses.

Ongwae asked young scholars to follow in his footsteps by being consistent readers, adding that good leaders are those who make books their friends.

“All these leaders you see here went to school and obeyed their teachers and parents to motivate them to pay school fees as they pursued their education,” he said.

He praised the fallen professor as a man who cherished peace and asked the residents to observe peace by forgetting their political differences but join hands for quick development.

Dr Stephen Momanyi of Rongo University said that the Bogonko served his students well and encouraged them to embark on impactful research and publish them for common reading and reference.

“Professor Sorobea passed on after publishing more than 100 publications behind his name as a legacy,” he said, observing that scholars die but their work remains.

Area Member of Parliament Japhet Mokaya said that the country had lost a scholar whose gap will take a long time to replace.

He asked his children to hold the wisdom they derived from their father to help them remain united and perpetuate his legacy.

Speaker after speaker that included Kisii County Woman Representative Dorice Aburi agreed that the scholar was a cheerful and loving man who aspired to empower many people through education.
