Engaging pupils in the election process allows them to understand voting better. Thumaita East School head teacher Dennis Kariuki said that education has transformed with the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) in place, and students need to learn how to adapt to these changes.
He emphasized that participating in elections, like the one held at their school, will equip learners with knowledge about the basic requirements of an electoral process.
During the voting exercise, pupils were actively involved, taking on roles from clerks to presiding officers.
Although the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) from the Gichugu constituency conducted the exercise, the experience was engaging for the pupils, who quickly pointed out mistakes, such as not marking their fingers after voting. Collins Kaboro was elected as the new governor with 167 votes, defeating Dorcas Muchira, who received 121 votes.

Additionally, three votes were rejected. The newly elected governor will appoint six cabinet secretaries responsible for running the school, contrasting with the past when the school head would directly approach a leader to discuss necessary developments.

An IEBC officer noted that sharing responsibilities through this process prepares the pupils to become great leaders. She encouraged current leaders to emulate the positive example set by the pupils, highlighting their mature approach to campaigning. Mr. Kariuki pointed out that the CBC is practical and relevant.
Howeve added that school faces some challenges, including a lack of internet access, resources, and learning materials that are often sent home to assist with homework.
“We face challenges like the lack of internet and learning resources. If these resources were made available, we could significantly improve our ability to support our learners,” said Kariuki.
