Kirinyaga University lecturers have held peaceful demonstrations demanding the implementation of the 2017-2021 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).
UASU Kirinyaga chapter Chairperson, Dr. Lucas Macharia, said that the demos were held over alleged mistreatment of lecturers by the university’s management and displeasure over failed talks regarding the CBA.
Dr. Macharia said that they are the only lecturers who are yet to paid diagonally ever since the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) issued an advisory for horizontal payment.
The union Spokesperson, Dr. Robert Gitau, said that the lecturers have called for dialogue with the university but have efforts have borne no fruit.
Dr. Gitau said that if not effected, then they will be forced to go on strike until the matter is acted upon.
He lamented that the institution owes them arrears for the past three years.
The Spokesperson noted that since 2020, they have not been receiving 9% of their salary but is usually miscalculated as paid on their payslips.
“Where is our 9% that is always left out after miscalculation? We have been waiting for this since then, but we are always being snubbed,” he went on.
He added that when their arrears are deposited to their accounts and the CBA is implemented fully, they will consider asking for a salary increment to be at par with their colleagues in other varsities.
