Kilifi county urgently needs 170 more adult education teachers to enhance effective learning in the region, the county Adult Education Officer (AEO) Rehema Juma has said.
Speaking to Education News in Kilifi town recently, Juma lamented that learning in the literacy centres in the region has been hampered by an acute shortage of teachers.
She said that the current enrolment of adult learners stands at 2,900 learners, compared to only 20 full-time teachers assisted by 59 part-time teachers who are not enough either.
The Officer thus asked the government to employ more adult education teachers in the country and deploy them across the county.
“Lack of teachers in the literacy centres discourages learners to attend classes regularly,” she said.
Juma lauded the teachers in service for continuing teaching despite being under a lot of pressure.

She asked parents to enroll their children who dropped out of school to adult secondary schools near them to continue with their education.
“The Directorate of Adult Education in the country is highly committed in providing education to those people who never attended formal education during their early years,” she added.
The AEO urged NGOs, well-wishers, charitable organizations and even individuals to support adult education programmes in the county.
