Kilifi County government and stakeholders have partnered to instill business and entrepreneurial skills to high school students in the area as a way of preparing them to be innovators and job creators of the future.
Speaking at Juwaba Hall in Kilifi town during a two day training session for 200 students selected from various secondary schools in the area, Deputy Governor Florah Chibule said the training which is in its third year in collaboration with ABE Global Organization was a stepping stone in ensuring that young people are nurtured to be economically independent by the time they complete their post-secondary school education.

“As the world is moving, there will be some professions that will be absolute and the youth will come up with new and unique jobs. We are taking you through this program so that after you complete your secondary and university education, you will be able to create your own unique jobs and make the world a better place economically,” she said.
During the training, the students were taken through self- innovative classes where they come up with business ideas and how to actualize them.
Lameck Rimba from Ribe Boys High School came up with an idea of making door mats out of used head wigs and braids arguing that they could be recycled and used to make mats instead of burning them and polluting the ecosystem.

“The plastic braids that ladies plait on their heads will be resourceful if they can be used to make door mats. If they are disposed through throwing or burning, they end up polluting the ecosystem since they don’t rot away,” he said adding that the venture will help him spend his holidays in a good way and also generate income.
Boniface Kamau who is the Country Director of Adult Basic Education Global ABE said that the skills being impacted in the students will be the most sort-after in the near future as the world focuses on Africa as a labour market.
“Those are the skills that the world will demand from them when it comes their time to join our labour market and as statistics indicate, Africa is the next hub for labour and market since all the world giant companies are looking at Africa as the source of exclusive market and therefore this students are well positioned for such opportunities. When we train them and provide them with these kinds of skills, then definitely we are mentoring them,” he said.
