The Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) in collaboration with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has launched an in-depth Facilitators Training Manual aimed at empowering teachers.

KICD noted that the move is intended to ensure smooth implementation of curriculum frameworks for Grades 7, 8 and 9 under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) and tailored programmes for the prevocational level, catering to learners with diverse special needs.

The training manual equips teachers with the skills to apply differentiated and learner-centered pedagogies, fostering inclusivity across junior schools and prevocational levels.

By focusing on experimental methods like inquiry-based learning, problem-solving and blended learning, educators can address the varied needs of students. For example, play-based learning encourages curiosity and resilience, while project-based approaches develop teamwork and critical thinking.

KICD emphasizes understanding the unique traits of junior school learners and those in prevocational levels. The junior school curriculum provides broad exposure to subjects helping students identify their interests and potential as they prepare for senior school.

The prevocational curriculum equips learners with intellectual and physical disabilities with foundational work skills. This includes specialized programmes for those with severe autism, cerebral palsy or intellectual disabilities.

These efforts ensure that every learner, regardless of ability, experiences an inclusive education environment. For learners with intellectual disabilities, adaptations in pedagogy and resources ensure equal participation and engagement.

By investing in teacher training and implementing learner-centered pedagogies, the country is not just preparing students for academic achievements but also nurturing lifelong learners ready to face real-world challenges.
