KICD: This is how CBC’s Senior School will be structured

The Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) has come out to explain how the envisioned Senior School will run under the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC).

According to KICD Director and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Prof. Charles Ong’ondo, Senior School, which will comprise Grades 10 to 12, will run for three years for learners in the age bracket of 15 to 18 years, and will mark the end of Basic Education as defined in the Basic Education Act, 2013.

It will also lay the foundation for further education and training at the tertiary level and the world of work, with learners who will be exiting this level in 2028 being expected to be engaged, empowered and ethical citizens who are ready to participate in the socio-economic development of the nation.

Learners will also be ready to specialize in a career path of choice since they have had opportunities to explore their own potential, interests and personality, with pre-career stage entailing students learning core and elective subjects based on career choice, interests, personality and aptitude.

According to country’s curriculum developer, the core subjects at Senior School will be English and Kiswahili whereby learners who will take the Languages track with English and Kiswahili as one of the learning areas will be expected to take another third learning area.

KICD has further explained that both English and Kiswahili shall focus on functional skills such as listening, speaking, reading, writing, and correct use of language structure, since developing communication skills are a key component of skills needed in the 21st century and integral to career success.

The other core subjects will be Physical Education (PE) which will aim to extend the development of sports skill, physical wellness and sportsmanship in all learners at Senior School, and Community Learning Project (CLP), which is tailored to provide experimental learning opportunities that enable learners to apply learnt competencies and values in different contexts as they engage in mutually beneficial projects within the community.

Pathways and Tracks

Under Arts and Sports Pathway at Senior School, there will be two major tracks which will be Sports Science comprising Sports and Recreation, and Physical Education as learning areas; and Arts which will have Music and Dance, Theatre and Film, and Fine Arts as learning areas.

For learners who will choose the Social Science pathway, it will have two tracks of Languages and Literature, and Humanities and Business Studies.

For Languages and Literature, it will have 10 learning areas as follows: English, Literature in English, Indigenous Languages, Kenya Sign Language/Kiswahili, Fasihi ya Kiswahili, Sign Language, Arabic, French, German, and Mandarin (Chinese).

Humanities and Business Studies track will have Religious (Christian, Islamic, and Hindu) Education, CPL, Business Studies, History and Citizenship, and Geography.

Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Pathway will have three tracks of Pure Sciences (Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and General Science), Applied Sciences (Agriculture, Computer Science, and Home Science), and Technical Studies (Aviation, Building and Construction, Electricity, Metalwork, Power Mechanics, Woodwork, Media Technology, and Marine and Fisheries Technology).

KICD has further stated that the Curriculum for Media Technology and Marine and Fisheries Technology in the Technical Studies track will be developed later for particular schools.
