Kenya Methodist University (KEMU) students, some of their lecturers, and the community today held demonstrations to protest the rising cases of insecurity in the area.
The protesters who walked from the university to Meru town claimed that in the recent past, some of them had lost valuables while walking to or from the main campus in Meru.
“As KEMU students, we have been attacked severally. We didn’t come to Meru to be killed,” said Kennedy Otieno, the KEMU students’ Secretary general.
Hanna Kasim, the student’s treasurer, reiterated that they were out to raise their voices over insecurity.
“We are not at the university to be raped. We came for studies, and we demand security from the government and the community around,” she said.
The students also called on the County government to ensure that more street lights are erected in the area.

The protests come barely a day after the body of a 25-year-old male student at the university was found dangling from a roof at a house in the area.
Following the incident, the students alleged that he might have been killed.
However, Meru County police Commander Steve Oloo said that after a team of security officers visited the scene, a preliminary report indicated that it might have been a case of suicide.
“While at the scene, the officers discovered that the student could have committed suicide, but investigations are still ongoing. It is painful to have lost such a boy,” said the Meru police boss.
