Kegonye Secondary School principal faces backlash for sending late students home

The students were returning to school after half term break

Seven students from Kegonye Secondary School in Nyeri County found themselves stranded in Othaya town on the evening of Tuesday, March 4, after their principal allegedly sent them home for arriving one hour late to school.

Reports indicate the students were expected to return to school by 1 pm but arrived at 2pm. As a result, the principal reportedly instructed them to leave. Ndungu Nyoro, in a Facebook post, explained that some students faced transportation challenges and had travelled from Naivasha, Nakuru, and Ruiru. Despite these difficulties, the principal insisted they depart the premises.

Unable to return home at night, the students were taken to Othaya Police Station for safety. The incident quickly sparked outrage on social media, with many criticizing the principal’s decision to send the students home over a one-hour delay.

A section of netizens questioned the justification for such strict discipline, arguing that student welfare should not be compromised for punctuality.

The principal of Kegonye Secondary School has faced widespread criticism.

Many Kenyans, including the students’ parents, condemned the decision. They asserted that the students should not have been sent away under these circumstances.
