Kathonzweni Boys will be hosting this year’s Makueni County Kenya Science and Engineering Fair (KSEF) competitions for three days. The event was officially opened by Makueni County Director of Education, Charles Nyakundi, who emphasized that such competitions give students the opportunity to practice what they have been learning in class.
“Such an opportunity, trust me, if you excel in this, even in exams, it will be a walkover,” Nyakundi said. He urged both the organizers and students to always be time-conscious.
The host principal, Patrick Wambua, noted that different sub-counties are attending according to their scheduled dates. He highlighted the importance of science in fostering development, adding that many researchers use the students’ presentations as inspiration for further research, leading to new inventions and innovations. This, he said, is encouraging.

“The science fair competition is a way of encouraging children to not only enjoy science but also excel in it and gain confidence in themselves,” Wambua remarked. “The presentations call for one to believe in themselves and be courageous in facing the judges. It’s not something hard, and I encourage students interested in science to try it.”
The principal expressed hope that the event would proceed smoothly without any major issues and wished the best of luck to every participant.
The Kenya Science and Engineering Fair organizing secretary and Makueni County secretary, Peter Mwinzi, expressed confidence that the county would perform well and reach the final level. He noted that last year, the county won four trophies, including those from Makueni Boys, Kilili, and Kikima secondary schools.

“I am confident that we will do well again, especially since we are hosting the regionals. Our students will make our county proud,” Mwinzi added.
The competitions began with presentations from Nzaui, Mukaa, and Mbooni West sub-counties on the first day, followed by Mbooni East, Kambu, Kibwezi, and Kilungu on the second day. The final day will feature presentations from Makueni, Kathonzweni, and Makindu sub-counties.
