Kamashinani Foundation kindles hope for bright needy learners in Meru

Meru Senator Kathuri Murungi (seated left) and Meru Deputy Governor Mutuma M'Ithinkia pose for a photo with some of Kamashinani Foundation beneficiaries. The foundation has helped poor children in Meru to access education.

When Wendy Kinya scored 406 marks in the 2023 KCPE to top in her sub-county, there was no describing her joy as the future opened up endless opportunities.

But her dream to become a doctor would  seem a little out of reach due to the fact that she might never join Pangani Girls due to lack of fees.

Kinya’s mother Lucy Karea Kaii said her efforts to find a scholarship for her daughter were futile despite visiting various organizations and knocking on people’s doors seeking help.

Her fears and worries were however vanquished when the Kamashinani Foundation, a non-profit organization owned by Meru Senator Kathuri Murungi’s family, came to her rescue.

“Wendy Kinya’s story was aired on television whereby she was seeking support from well-wishers to help her join Pangani Girls. Kinya had 406 marks at a public day school Mwitu Mura Pry School. Kamashinani Foundation will give her a scholarship to pursue her education from form one to form four including shopping. I love this act of impacting positively (to) the needy, bright future leaders,” a statement from the Meru Senator read.

Kinya’s story is almost similar to that of 150 other bright needy learners from various parts of Meru County who could have missed Form One places this year due to fees challenges, but Kamashinani Foundation happened at their hour of need.

Hundreds of learners and residents have benefitted from the foundation.

Apart from financing learners from humble backgrounds, Kamashinani Foundation also ensures that learners get mentorship on academics, personal development, and careers.

“The foundation’s main objective is not just to pay school fees but also to mentor beneficiaries throughout their education system,” Murungi noted.

Various leaders and residents have hailed the foundation’s efforts to fight poverty in Meru County by educating bright, needy, and vulnerable children.

“This foundation is one of the few legit non-profit organizations in Kenya working with a range of partners to transform and improve the livelihoods of the community through education, health and community service,” Jeremy Mwandiki, a resident, said.

“It’s through foundations such as Kamashinani Foundation that the society becomes great. Well done to our Senator and his spouse for such a great initiative,” Florence Murithi added.
