There was pomp and colour as the alumni association of Koyonzo Mixed Secondary marked their Annual General Meeting (AGM) at Darrell Paradise Resort in Bungoma.

A reasonable number of former students of the prestigious school gathered to bond, celebrate and even put up proper structures aimed at making the association strong.

It was a perfect moment for them to meet physically and share on so many matters pertaining old students of Koyonzo.

Koyonzo Secondary was established in the mid-90s as a mixed secondary school in Matungu and operated so till 2013 when girls were moved to a separate station paving ways for boys only since 2014.

Chair Emeritus, a renowned Mathematics and Business teacher at Nangina Girls Francisca Wamukoya took members through the background of the association by highlighting what pushed her and other visionary members to have it registered and the journey they have walked to see the association be what it is.

Koyonzo was a mixed school till 2013 whe when girls were moved.

“In the formative years, we started as a welfare group of a select few individuals among them Silas Sammy Makokha, Churchill Wanyera, Mark Rupia, Jeff Okara and Francisca Wamukoya among others,” she said.

She added, “We could go to our former school and plant trees and even motivate our teachers with tokens especially during the school AGMs and special school functions until our former principal Stima Sammy presented to us a bright but needy student asking us to support him as the old students.”

She said the idea of registration was born at that time and great friends in the legal profession and old boys helped them and had a certificate for registration.

“We understand that that there is no one in the history of the earth who is so much interested in the success of the institution like its former students. As former students, our focus is now going to shift towards making our school a better place and that school posts quality results like before,” she said.

The association started as a welfare group.

Joseph Martin Mulamwa, the association Chairperson hailed everyone for turning up for the meeting and for the support they get from members.

“I know we have a long way to go and I want to thank everyone here for cooperation and immense support. If we have to go far then there is need to go together and harmonise any other available outfit to one great family which is alumni association of Koyonzo Secondary,” Mulama said.

The Association plans to roll out a number of projects aimed at adding value to the association besides the normal welfare contributions.

For the better tracking of the school programmes, the association resolved to have a slot in the board of the school so that the voice of the Alumni can also be factored in administration of the school.
