Kakamega to construct ECDE centres in special schools next year

Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa.

Kakamega County will establish Early Childhood Development and Education (ECDE) centres in special schools in the area to enable integration for children living with disabilities.

Speaking in Kakamega during the distribution of assorted foodstuff to People Living With Disabilities (PLWDs) to spread Christmas cheer, Barasa said that vulnerable groups will be prioritized in the allocation of NGCDF funds following its increase from Ksh120 million to Ksh140 million.

He also distributed 100 wheelchairs from Universal Donors to commemorate the passing on of nominated MCA Godliver Omondi who died after a short illness.

The Governor said that the county will set aside a special fund for caregivers who support PLWDs and also construct resource centres and rehabilitation of polytechnics in the Shivakala and Shinyalu areas.

Further, he announced that medical assessment fees for PLWDs will be done away with in all public health facilities.

Barasa urged parents with disabled children to stop hiding them and instead enroll them in school to holistically mould and nurture their abilities and talents.

He also assured them that he has allocated sufficient bursary funds to aid needy students next year.
