Kakamega Governor’s Cup 2024 to begin on September 28

Kakamega Governor Fernandez Barasa with Mophat Mandela, his sports CECM at the Bukhungu Stadium. The county has organized a youth sporting tournament slated to begin September.

Kakamega County is abuzz with anticipation as the thrilling Governors Cup 2024 is set to be launched on September 28 at the vibrant Muranda Primary School grounds in Shinyalu Constituency.

This tournament serves as a vital platform for youth both in school and out across all 60 Wards to exhibit their skills and potentially earn spots on elite teams.

While addressing the press over the weekend, the Kakamega County Executive Committee Member for Social Services, Sports, Youth, Gender & Culture Mophat Mandela stated that in line with the governor’s vision for wealth creation and social development, the Governor’s Cup will be inclusive and fair competition for all participants.

The tournament kicks off with registration on launch day, with Ward preliminaries scheduled from September 28 to October 27.

This will be followed by sub-county finals occurring from October 27 to November 2.

The excitement continues with preliminary matches from November 23 to December 4, culminating in a spectacular rugby showdown on December 27 and 28.

“This year’s event proudly introduces women’s football alongside the men’s competitions, ensuring every discipline gets the spotlight it deserves,” he said

With an enthusiastic public response, a staggering 865 teams are expected to participate.

However, to maintain discipline and commitment, only clubs from the previous year will be on-boarded.

“We are thrilled for this year’s Governors Cup, which promises to be a showcase of immense talent and passion for both football and rugby,” Mandela said.

In a bid to enhance organization, the tournament will feature a new sports management system designed for seamless player registration, fixture management, and results tracking, addressing challenges from previous years.

Scouts from reputable teams nationwide are invited to witness the raw talent on display as our young athletes vie for the coveted Governors Cup title.
