JSS teachers write to TSC CEO over Nyamira teacher who was beaten by school head

TSC CEO Dr Nancy Macharia

The Association of Junior Secondary School Teachers (KEJUSTA) is demanding that the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) take disciplinary action against Dickens Omenda, the head teacher of Nyanchoka DEB, who recently assaulted Junior Secondary Schools (JSS) teacher Vincent Nyamanga.

In a letter addressed to the TSC CEO, Dr Nancy Macharia, and copied to the Cabinet Secretary for Education, Julius Ogamba, the association pointed out that it has received numerous complaints from teachers regarding intimidation, violence, and threats from head teachers.

They expressly referred to an incident that occurred earlier this week in Nyamira, in which the head teacher assaulted and injured Nyamanga for arriving late to school, resulting in the teacher needing hospitalization for several days.

The association expressed concern that teachers on probation are particularly vulnerable to victimization if they voice their concerns about intimidation and harassment.

To this end, they are requesting the TSC to carry out an independent and thorough investigation into the actions of head teachers and to enforce appropriate disciplinary measures.

Additionally, they propose that TSC officials be deployed to JSS to monitor teachers’ well-being and investigate reports of mistreatment.

“Clear measures must be instituted to protect teachers from retaliation, including the protection of teachers under probation who may fear speaking up due to the threat of remaining on probation indefinitely,” the letter reads.

Furthermore, the association demands clear measures to protect teachers from retaliation, especially for those on probation who may feel threatened about speaking out due to the risk of remaining on probation indefinitely.

Lastly, they propose a nationwide sensitization programme targeting head teachers, reminding them of the importance of leading with professionalism, dignity, and respect.
