JSS teachers in Nandi demand different contract terms with TSC

JSS interns take to the streets in Nandi County to demand different contracts with TSC.

Junior Secondary School (JSS) interns in Nandi County now demand different contract terms with the Teacher’s Service Commission (TSC).

They accused TSC of forcefully wanting them to renew their contracts, saying they have received SMSs requiring them to reapply for work.

“We have received SMSs directing us to start the process of renewing our contracts. How can we do this yet labour laws require that any employee is entitled to confirmation after serving for 6 months? This is unacceptable,” said Jerobon.

Led by Daisy Kirwa and Williter Jerobon through the streets of Kapsabet town, they said although labour laws require one to be confirmed upon serving for 6 months, TSC was not keen on the same.

Speaking in Kapsabet town, they accused politicians of influencing teachers’ employment, claiming some recently graduated individuals have been confirmed with older ones being left out.

They urged President William Rutto to come to their rescue, saying they have suffered enough with many of them doing menial jobs to make ends meet.

The teachers further want their salaries harmonized, adding that the expiring contracts came with a stipend of Ksh20,000 and only Ksh17,000 remained after deduction.

“We are warning politicians against meddling with education matters. Some politicians have pushed for the confirmation of individuals who graduated recently while those who graduated many years ago still struggle to get jobs. As teachers we say no to this,” added Jerobon.

President William Rutto has since assured that JSS interns will be confirmed on permanent and pensionable terms in 2025.
