A Junior Secondary School (JSS) teacher at Nyanchoka DEB, in Nyamira, is nursing injuries in a hospital after the head teacher Dickson Omenda allegedly assaulted him for reporting late at school.

Vincent Onyancha said he arrived at school a few minutes after 8am yesterday and proceeded to class to teach when the ugly incident occurred.

“The head teacher entered the class where I was teaching and landed on me with blossoms and kicks in front of the learners, and from there, I didn’t know what happened until I found myself in the hospital,” he said.

Teachers at the school said that they were attracted by the commotion of learners in the troubled classroom, where they went and found the head teacher stranded as his victim collapsed on the ground.

They took the teacher to the staff and administered first aid before rushing him to Ikonge Hospital, where he was admitted for treatment.

Following the incident, a group of Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) invaded the school and bayed for the blood of the alleged headteacher, who took to his heels to evade them.

“We demand an explanation for this unprofessional behaviour from the principal within twenty-four hours before we follow him to his home to teach him a lesson,” said one of the unionists.

Ikonge Hospital administration said the teacher was suffering from swells on the chicks and bruises on the knees. However, he was responding well to the medications.

Nyamira County TSC Director Erick Mogaka said he had received the complaints and that an investigation had been launched.

Mogaka asked the irate teachers not to violate the law, saying that two wrongs cannot be made right.

He asked those offended to channel their dismay through the police for legal intervention.
