Sabina Aroni, the Central Region Director of Education, presided over the commissioning of five new Grade 9 classrooms at Nyeri Primary School on Monday January 13, 2025. The classrooms, built by the government under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) infrastructure expansion program, are part of a broader initiative to improve learning facilities and accommodate the growing number of junior secondary school students.
Speaking at the ceremony, Aroni lauded the government’s commitment to advancing education and ensuring that schools are adequately equipped to implement the CBC. “The completion of these classrooms is a significant milestone in ensuring that learners transition smoothly into junior secondary education,” she said.
The classrooms, built to modern standards, are designed to provide a better learning environment for the first cohort of Grade 9 students under the CBC framework. Each classroom is spacious, well-ventilated, and equipped with desks and chairs to accommodate up to 40 students per class.

Nyeri Primary School headteacher, Peter Mwangi, expressed gratitude to the government for prioritizing the school in the national development agenda. “We are deeply grateful for this initiative, which addresses our immediate needs for space and resources.

These new classrooms will ease congestion and create a better environment for both teaching and learning,” he noted. Parents present at the event expressed optimism about the future of their children’s education. “With these new facilities, our children will have better opportunities to excel in their studies,” said Mary Wanjiru, a parent.
The commissioning of the classrooms at Nyeri Primary is part of a nationwide effort by the Ministry of Education to address challenges brought about by the implementation of the CBC. In the Central Region alone, over 500 new classrooms have been constructed to accommodate the increasing number of students.

Aroni called on teachers to continue playing their role in molding learners into responsible citizens. “Education is the backbone of any nation’s development. Let us work together to ensure every child gets the opportunity to thrive,” she concluded.
