IPOA probes shooting of schoolgirl in class in Ongata Rongai

An X-Ray of the hand that was shot by unknown people in Ongata Rongai. The girl might not sit her KPSEA exams as the recovery will take some time.

The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has started investigating an incident where a school girl was shot in her left hand while in class in Ongata Rongai, Kajiado County.

The shooting happened on the morning of Tuesday, September 17, 2024, when students of Multimedia University were protesting, blocking Magadi Road.

The girl from Prime Junior School which is opposite Ongata Rongai Police Station was in class when the incident happened. She said she was seated in class when she felt pain in her hand and was  forced to scramble to safety.

According to her teacher, they heard a blast and rushed to the class and found the girl bleeding as her colleagues went into a panic. She was rushed to hospital where she was treated and put on the path of recovery.

The teacher who sought anonymity said the bullet had hit the roof before it got the child.

The girl’s  mother Faith Mzinzi said she is seeking justice of her child. Robinson Karata, the head teacher, said the child will not be able to sit the Grade 6 KPSEA examinations, which she was preparing for.

IPOA is also investigating an incident where police were recorded clobbering a MMU student during the protests.

The officers were recorded clobbering one of the students next to a teargas canister that they had detonated.

IPOA in a statement said a Rapid Response Team has been dispatched to the university.

Among other instructions, the team will “establish the veracity of a video clip widely shared on social media, depicting a youth being assaulted by police officers”.

The authority has established the identity of one student who sustained a fracture in his foot.

“IPOA reiterates that members of the National Police Service (NPS) should discharge their mandate professionally and responsibly in accordance with Article 244 of the Constitution,” they said.

Police have not issued a statement on the same and senior officers had told the family the incident is under investigation.
