Basic Education PS Dr Belio Kipsang. The Tusome programme kicks off this term with a feedback mechanism to improve it.

The Ministry of Education (MoE) and USAID have resumed the literacy programme for lower grades that was popularly known as Tusome.

Kenya Primary Literacy Program (KPLP) targets all grades 1 -3 in public primary schools. A technical supervisor from Education Development Centre (EDC) will be the lead facilitator.

Already the training of CSOs, head teachers and lower school teachers has been done and was concluded last Friday. As schools reopen next week, CSOs and heads of institutions will have a well cut out role in ensuring the success of the intensive programme.

Head teachers have the task of ensuring that parents and other stakeholders are fully sensitized on KPLP.

They are to hold meetings with the stakeholders and highlight the benefits of the programme, as well as provide accurate data to assist to establish the level of learning and the progress of learning.

Teachers running the programme are expected to work diligently. It is the responsibility of the head teacher to ensure that the teachers use recommended books, plan their lessons and attend all trainings and monthly reflection meetings.

The head teachers are responsible for encouraging a reading culture in their schools. They can do this by setting up libraries and encouraging parents and their Boards of Management (BoMs) to buy books for the learners.

During lessons observations, the head teachers are expected to support CSOs and other programme officers. Where possible, they will accompany the officers to class in offering support to the teachers.

The CSOs on their part will ensure that they visit the schools and offer the necessary support to the teachers. They are also required to organize for monthly reflection meetings where the teachers will be able to give an overview of the challenges they are facing and be helped on how they can surmount them.

The CSOs will also be there to ensure that teachers use the correct teaching/learning resources. It is from the CSOs’ findings that the programme initiators will make the necessary adjustments and improvements towards its success.
