As the 2024 KCSE marking process concludes and the nation prepares for the official release of results, candidates and parents alike are filled with anticipation. This period, however, can also be marked by anxiety and emotional strain.
Uncertainty, coupled with the pressure to perform well, can take a toll on candidates’ mental and emotional health. It is crucial to manage these emotions effectively to maintain a positive outlook.
Below, we explore strategies that can help candidates manage their expectations and anxiety during this waiting period.
- Acknowledge and Accept Your Emotions
The first step to managing anxiety is acknowledging it. It is normal to feel a mix of excitement, fear, and nervousness as you await your results. Suppressing these emotions can make anxiety worse. Instead, recognize that it’s okay to feel anxious—it’s a natural response to uncertainty.
Talking to someone you trust about how you’re feeling can also help relieve the emotional burden. Whether it’s a friend, parent, teacher, or counsellor, expressing your concerns will allow you to offload some of the stress.
- Maintain a Realistic Outlook
It’s easy to let your mind race with all the possible outcomes. However, dwelling too much on hypothetical scenarios can fuel unnecessary fear. To manage your expectations, try to maintain a realistic perspective. Remember that the results do not define your entire future. KCSE is an important milestone, but it is not the only measure of your abilities, intelligence, or potential.
- Stay Occupied
Idle time during the waiting period can amplify anxiety. One of the most effective ways to combat this is by staying engaged in productive activities. Keeping yourself busy not only distracts your mind but also helps reduce overthinking.
Here are a few things you can do:
Learn a new skill: Whether it’s cooking, driving, or learning a new language, picking up a new skill can be an exciting and fulfilling way to pass the time.
Exercise: Physical activity is a great way to relieve stress. Engaging in sports, yoga, or regular workouts can improve both your mental and physical well-being.
Volunteer: If possible, get involved in community service or volunteer work. Helping others can shift your focus away from your own worries and bring a sense of fulfillment.
Read and research future opportunities: This is an excellent time to explore options for your future—whether it’s researching college courses, vocational training, or career paths.
- Visualize Positivity
While managing expectations, it’s also important to cultivate positive thinking. Visualization is a powerful tool to help ease anxiety. Take time to imagine yourself succeeding, receiving your results, and planning for the next step of your journey.
- Avoid Comparisons
In today’s digital age, it’s easy to fall into the trap of comparing yourself to others. Conversations about exam results on social media or in peer groups can lead to undue pressure. It’s important to remember that everyone’s journey is different, and comparisons can fuel anxiety.
- Engage in Relaxation Techniques
Practising mindfulness and relaxation techniques can significantly reduce anxiety. Deep breathing exercises, meditation, or even short walks in nature can help you stay grounded and calm.

- Prepare for All Outcomes
While hoping for the best, it is wise to mentally prepare yourself for all possible outcomes. This doesn’t mean expecting failure, but rather understanding that results may vary. Planning for different outcomes can help you feel more in control and less fearful of the unknown.
- Seek Support
If your anxiety feels overwhelming, don’t hesitate to seek professional help. A counsellor or psychologist can provide coping strategies that are tailored to your individual needs. Schools often have guidance counsellors who are experienced in helping students manage exam-related stress.
Waiting for KCSE results can be an anxious time, but with the right mindset and coping strategies, you can manage your expectations and stress. Remember that this period is just one chapter in your life’s journey, and whatever the outcome, there are always opportunities to move forward. Stay positive, stay occupied, and take care of your mental well-being during this time. The results may be out of your hands now, but your response to them will shape the future.
