Homa Bay County Governor Gladys Wanga has told the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to employ more teachers to fill the shortage in her county.

Speaking in Homa Bay town, the governor said that the region has a shortage of 3000 primary school teachers and feared that this might cause a downfall in the education standards.

She said that her office has devoted more funds towards the employment of ECDE teachers into Permanent and Pensionable terms, construction of enough classrooms and improvement of school feeding programme. But feared that all these efforts will be futile if the ECDE learners will not get enough teachers to nurture them when they transition to primary school level.

She added that her government allocated KSh160 million to construct 160 classrooms for ECDE learners and demanded the National Government to do their part in the employment of primary school teachers.

She regretted that in the past, the government employed teachers who came from other regions but after securing employment they sought transfers and left the leaners suffering.

Balancing of teachers

She asked the government to take note of this loophole and seal it once and for all because it was becoming a problem in the balancing of teachers serving in the region.

Some 5862 teachers will be recruited this January to serve in various schools out of which, Homa Bay will get only 135 teachers.

Ndhiwa and Homa Bay sub counties will each get 22 teachers followed by Rachuonyo North which will get 17 teachers.

Suba, Mbita and Rachuonyo East sub-counties will get 14 teachers each while Rachuonyo South will get 11 teachers.

Wanga termed these figures insignificant compared to the existing teacher shortfall. She said most schools have larger populations of children hence the need to post enough teachers to the area to teach these learners.
