Kenyan doctor, Dr. Edwin Bogonko, has been elected as the president of the Minnesota Medical Association (MMA) making history as the first African to lead the Association since its inception 158 years ago.
Dr. Bogonko said that he is looking forward to lead the organization to ensure Minnesota emerges as the best State to practice Medicine.
Speaking exclusively to Education News, he said he knew Medicine was his purpose at 12 years old when he nursed his younger brother who suffered from heart issues.
“As a child growing up in Kisii, I knew I was going to become a doctor and worked hard to achieve my ambitions,” he said.
The Doctor joined the University of Nairobi to study medicine where he graduated in 1993 and practiced in Kenya until 1999 when he relocated to the United States of America.
When asked how it felt to be the first African to hold the demanding position, he said that he was proud and aspired to use his position to ensure equitable services to people in the medical field.
“My major mission will be to increase the medical outreach services to unrepresented minority communities,” he said.

He was flanked by the Association’s communication director Dan Hauser, who lauded him as a determined and focused individual.

Dr. Bogonko shall serve as the principal spokesman of the organization and shall also testify at the State Capitol whenever the voice of a physician is needed.
