The Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the Tobacco Control Board, has organized a three-day workshop at Meru University of Science and Technology to address the rising cases of tobacco addiction, particularly among young people.
Speaking when she launched the workshop, Tobacco Control Board Chairlady Naomi Shaban expressed concerns over the rising trend of tobacco use, especially among young girls and children.
She blamed the latest innovative marketing tactics employed by cigarette manufacturers, such as adding flavours like candy, fruits and other food items, which have attracted a younger demographic.
“Many tobacco control laws were enacted years ago, but manufacturers have found new ways to circumvent these regulations and attract new customers,” said Shaban.
Dr George Mungania, Meru County’s Health Executive Committee Member (CECM), emphasized the county’s commitment to combating this issue.
