Graduates challenged to create opportunities instead of relying on govt jobs

Prof Laila Abubakar, TUM Vice Chancellor. She encouraged graduates to find their own niche in the economy instead of looking up to the government to give them jobs.

Graduates have been challenged to create job opportunities instead of relying on employment as a way of fighting joblessness in the country.

This was said by Pwani University Vice Chancellor (VC) Laila Abubakar during Technical University of Mombasa (TUM)’s 12th graduation ceremony where more than 2,000 students graduated.

addressing the congregation as the chief guest, the VC said the economic situation in the country as it currently stands is unable to absorb all graduating youth into employment, hence the need for innovativeness.

“Your success will not be measured by the academic papers alone; you need to go out there and make an impact on society and the community at large. As you go out there remember currently the economy is not that good and so don’t expect to be employed. Become job creators and not job seekers,” she said.

The chairperson of the Pwani University Council Ambassador Benjamin Mweri said the university is aligning itself with the new Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).
