The country’s examination body Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) recently released officially the timetable for the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA), whose rehearsal will be on Friday October 25, 2024.
Although this will be the third time KPSEA under the new Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) will be administered by KNEC, it will be the first time the national assessment is conducted solely without tagging it along KCPE, which has phased out.
A total of 1,303,913 Grade 6 candidates are expected to sit the national assessment.
According to the KNEC timetable, the assessment will be conducted in three days from Monday October 28, 2024 when the candidates will sit Mathematics and English, followed by Integrated Science and Kiswahili on Tuesday October 29, 2024.
It will end on Wednesday October 30, 2024 with Creative Arts and Social Studies. The assessment will be used to monitor the learners’ progress while in primary school as they transition to Junior School.
The instructions and guidelines given to supervisors, teachers and the candidates by the Council’s Chief Executive Officer Dr David Njengere are almost similar to those of KCPE.

For instance, candidates will be required to be seated in the assessment room (formerly examination room) 15 minutes before the start time, with the morning sessions starting at 8.30 a.m.
Any candidate arriving late will be required to give a satisfactory reason to the supervisor, and only under exceptional circumstances will a paper be given to those who will be late by more than half an hour.
“You are not allowed to have in your possession or in your proximity while in the assessment room, any book, notes, papers or any other materials whatsoever except the correct question papers and any materials expressly authorized by the Kenya National Examinations Council,” warned KNEC.
Those learners with special needs who are following the Stage Based Pathway under the new curriculum will also be sitting their Kenya Intermediate Level Education Assessment (KILEA), their rehearsals being scheduled for the same day as that of KPSEA.
Unlike those who will be doing KPSEA, KILEA candidates are set to do their assessment for four days starting October 28, 2024.
The first day October 28, 2024, the candidates will be assessed on Communication, Social and Literacy Skills, while on the second day October 29, 2024, they will be assessed on Daily Living Skills and Religious Education.
On the third day October 30, 2024, they will be assessed on Sensory Motor Integration and Creative Activities. They will complete the assessment on October 31, 2024 with Numeracy, Environmental and Psychomotor Activities.
The assessment papers and activities under KILEA as per the KNEC timetable will each take a whole day.
As these unfold, KCSE will start officially on Monday November 4, 2024, although practicals and foreign languages will begin on October 22, 2024.
The examination will end on November 22, 2024.
