Grade 3 pupil nursing serious injuries sustained in demonstrations

Running battles between the police and Nyamache residents that led to the injury of a grade 3 pupil.

A Grade 3 pupil at Altimatum School is nursing wounds in a private hospital in Kisii County after he was trampled on by a demonstrating crowd.

According to his mother, the curious minor was watching the residents of Nyamache town who were demonstrating against area MP Innocent Obiri over unrepaired Nyamache bridge that was swept away by floods last year.

“I took my child to a private hospital after failing to be attended to at Nyamache Sub-county Hospital because of the ongoing health workers strike,” reported the mother.

A medical report revealed that the minor suffered a right foot and shoulder bone dislocations.

Residents said that the bridge was swept by floods and cut off transportation activities between Nyamache town and the County Commissioner’s (CC) administration offices, schools and Nyamache Hospital on the other side of the river.

Angry residents dismantle what remained of the Nyamache bridge.

Other places that were disconnected from the main town include Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) Nyamache Campus and Riombasa Secondary School.

The demonstrators were led by Masige East MCA Michael Motume and his Masige West counterpart Jacob Bagaka, who castigated the police for teargasing the crowd holding a peaceful demonstration.

Nyamache Sub-county Deputy County Commissioner (DCC) Joash Abongo termed the demonstrations illegal because the contractors had already reported on the ground for the repair of the bridge.

Demonstrators are scattered by police at Bobasi NGCDF office in Nyamache town.

He appealed to the two MCAs to iron out their political differences with area MP amicably instead of hiding behind the unrepaired bridge.

The protesters gave Obiri an ultimatum of two weeks to repair the bridge or face ‘the mother of all demonstrations’.
