Private developers who have grabbed land belonging to schools across the country will be prosecuted and will have to pay for the period they had encroached on the property, the Cabinet Secretary (CS) for Education has warned.
Speaking at Kanyumbuni Senior School in Mwawesa ward, Kilifi county, CS Julius Ogamba said that the Ministry had documented hundreds of schools countrywide that either lacked title deeds or their land had been encroached by private developers.
While launching a classroom constructed by the Kenya Primary Early Equity in Early Learning (KPEEL) at the school, Ogamba added that the grabbers shall be compelled to compensate the school management for the period they had stayed on the land.
CS Ogamba noted that a committee had been formed to collect all the data all school assets including land in preparation of issuing title deeds to all schools.

“I am warning those people who think that school land is available for grabbing, be prepared to exit before we reach there because we will initiate legal processes not only to recover that land but for you to pay the costs the school incurred for the period it was not using its land,” he said.
The CS also called on communities residing around schools and their properties to help safeguard them.
