Govt to disburse KSh48 billion school capitation funds next week, CS Treasury announces

Treasury CS, John Mbadi

In a significant announcement, Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi has reassured school administrators and education stakeholders that the Government will release KSh48.8 billion in capitation funds next week.

The funding, amounting to 50 per cent of the total education budget for 2025, aims to alleviate challenges schools have faced due to delayed disbursement.

During a visit to the Savona Water Project in Kakamega on Friday January 17, 2025 CS Mbadi explained that the delay in funding was primarily due to pressing debt obligations.

External creditors

“This month, we needed to settle a KSh70 billion loan to external creditors, which we have now completed. I assure schools and teachers that next week, we will be releasing KSh48 billion to support our education system, which we recognize as a critical social function,” said CS.

The capitation funds will cater for secondary, junior secondary and primary schools across the country.

There has been concerns among education stakeholders over the delay in releasing the capitation which has hampered smooth running of schools.

Responding to recent concerns raised by Controller of Budget Margaret Nyakang’o regarding counties issuing bursaries, Mbadi emphasized the need for collaboration between National and county governments.

He acknowledged the ongoing financial burden on parents, stating, “Many families struggle to afford the necessary payments for their children’s education.”

While noting that county governments are responsible for funding early childhood education, he advised for a cooperative framework with the National Government to address financial challenges effectively.

“It is feasible for us to work together and empower counties to fulfill their mandates, including issuing bursaries. This was supported by public participation, reflecting the wishes of the Kenyan people,” Mbadi added, noting that this perspective was his personal view.

As the government prepares to release these crucial funds, the focus remains on strengthening the education sector and ensuring that all students have access to quality education.
