Govt shall address all issues ailing education sector, DP Kindiki assures

Deputy President (DP) Prof. Kithure Kindiki has said that the government will address all education issues raised by the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB) regarding CBC and the new university funding model.

Last week, KCCB led by Chairman Maurice Muhatia, criticized the government for failing to address issues such as Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF) and cost of living, among other troubles facing Kenyans.

“We have matters of national concern, such as the crumbling CBC education system, health care services, reconstitution of the IEBC, a huge block of educated but unemployed youth and fighting the monster of corruption among others, that are surely top priorities,” the clergy said in their statement.

The DP, who was speaking at a church service in Ndia, Kirinyaga county on Sunday, said the government was open to views and criticism from all its citizens.

“We recognize that as human beings we are not perfect. As such, we are open to criticism and feedback from the church, civil society and NGOs so that we can serve Kenyans better,” he said.

“We know the transition from NHIF to SHIF has problems which seem to be troubling Kenyans, same with the transition to CBC; the government is listening and is working on streamlining things,” he added.

In response to the Bishops, Education CS Julius Ogamba in a statement on Thursday affirmed the education sector in the country was stable.

The CS emphasized that CBC has undergone extensive stakeholder consultation and public participation, including KCCB among other groups through the Presidential Working Party on Education Reforms.

He said the new funding model has eased the financial burden on universities, which had been indebted to the tune of Ksh70 billion, with many being rendered technically insolvent.
