Govt releases Ksh21B capitation to schools ahead of eventful Term 3

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba. Ksh21 billion in capitation has been released to basic learning institutions as strike looms.

The government has released a total of Ksh21,879,307,912.48 to schools as third term capitation to all public basic learning institutions ahead of a busy third term that has a teachers strike on the cards.

In a statement yesterday, Education Cabinet Secretary (CS) Julius Migos Ogamba noted that the capitation before the commencement of the new term will facilitate seamless resumption of school activities in the new term, urging school heads to use the funds prudently.

In the released capitation, a total of Ksh1,623,828,995.40 will go to Free Primary Education (FPE), Ksh6,109,654,633.94 to Free Day Junior School Education (FDJSE), and Ksh14,145,824,283.14 to Free Day Secondary Education (FDSE).

At the same time, Migos warned school heads against imposing unauthorized levies.

“The government affirms its commitment to fulfill its duty to learners, in line with Article 53(1)(b) of the constitution that entitles every child to free and compulsory basic education. School Heads and Principals are directed to ensure prudent use of these public resources entrusted to their care for the benefit of learners and to desist from imposing any unauthorized levies. As a Ministry, we will deal firmly with any verified cases of misappropriation of resources and the imposition of unauthorized levies,” he said.

The announcement comes as teachers strike awaits reopening on Monday August 26, 2024, even as KUPPET and KNUT hold top organ meetings this weekend in a bid to deliberate on the status of the strike.
