The Higher Education Principal Secretary Dr. Beatrice Inyangala has reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring there is a workable university funding model to allow for smooth running of higher learning institutions in the country.

While speaking during the 21st graduation ceremony of Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) on Wednesday, Dr. Inyangala affirmed the government’s effort in ensuring that concerns raised by all stakeholders over the new University Funding Model are addressed and sorted in a collaborative manner.

“There have been concerns and we listened, we have heard you and that’s why His Excellency President William Ruto has established a national committee to look into these grievances and revise this model in order to meet students and parents at the point of need.” Inyangala stated.

She said the government’s intention for creating the funding model was to develop a framework that would ensure that there is adequate flow of resources in universities to offer quality education where students are also supported according to their level of need.

She said, through the university funding model, the government provides up to 95 percent and families meet only 5 percent of the cost of University programs.

“Therefore I encourage all those who have concerns to share with the established committee so that together collaboratively in a participatory manner we can develop a funding model and framework that serves everyone effectively.” She urged.

The PS also called on the universities to diversify their funding streams saying that whatever is available from the exchequer cannot be enough for the quality of education that is desired.
