Govt asked to intensify counselling services in schools to curb suicides

West Mugirango MP Steve Mogaka. He has suggested that guidance and counselling in schools should be strengthened to curb suicides.

West Mugirango MP Steve Mogaka has decried the high cases of suicide around the country’s learning institutions, asking the government to intensify guidance and counselling services in schools.

He said he will move a motion in Parliament seeking compulsory guidance and counselling lessons to be introduced in the curriculum to enable the youth to grow with the attitude of self-restraint amidst life’s challenges.

“Mental instability which leads to death is becoming a menace in society and this calls for consolidated effort to eliminate it,” he said as he comforted teachers, students and parents of Sironga Girls after a KCSE candidate jumped off the third floor and died instantly yesterday.

“The girl jumped from the higher floor at dawn as others prepared to start the day and was rushed to hospital but unfortunately her life could not be saved,” Chief Principal Jane Nyanumba said.

Nyamira South Deputy County Commissioner (DCC) Florence Onunga who visited the hospital after learning about the incident confirmed the death.

Onunga said that her office had communicated to the parents of the deceased and she was pleased they gathered courage and come to terms with their daughter’s demise.

The commissioner asked students to share their problems with their teachers and colleagues for possible solutions instead of taking drastic decisions.

The motive behind the girl’s termination of her life could not be established immediately. The commissioner said her security officers had started investigations to establish the cause.

The death comes after a string of other suicides in the region, barely three days following Dr Desree Moraa Obwogi’s, an intern doctor who committed suicide and left a note citing too much pressure and unbearable working conditions in Gatundu Hospital.
