Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti has reiterated her commitment to creating interest in and developing talented players through sports. To this end, she has implemented specific strategies, such as the annual Governor Wavinya Cup tournament and the ongoing construction of the Football Technical Centre at New Machakos City.
She cited the annual Governor Wavinya Cup tournament and the ongoing construction of the Football Technical Centre at New Machakos City as key indicators of her plan.
“As a county, we are raising the bar on sporting talent to international standards. The upcoming world-class stadium, indoor arena and the Olympic size swimming pool are a testament to our commitment,” she said.
She was speaking during the flagging of the team that will join other Kenyan players representing the country in the East Africa Local Authorities Cultural Association (EALASCA) games in Kampala, Uganda.

Speaking yesterday during a brief ceremony at her office in Machakos, Wavinya said her administration will focus on establishing structures to detect and develop youth talent and link it to international platforms.
“I have developed an elaborate plan to nurture and grow sports talents among our young people through establishing structures for talent identification. Machakos has a huge untapped talent that can be exploited for the benefit of our youths,” said Wavinya.
The county boss said she will expose the young people to the emerging opportunities in global games even as she helps them stay away from destructive vices such as drug abuse and early pregnancies.
She said the games taking place in Kampala, Uganda, were one way of identifying and nurturing talents and creating employment opportunities for the youth.
“During my pre-election campaigns, I promised that my government would prioritize the development of youth talents, youth empowerment, and sports infrastructure in Machakos. I am determined to exploit the opportunities presented by sports to create employment for young people and develop our local economy,” said the county boss.
Team Machakos will join their counterparts from across the country in Busia before proceeding to Kampala for the week-long competitions, which start next Monday.
