A swimming pool project at Machakos School, which has remained a pipedream for the last 56 years, is now in sight following a fresh commitment by Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti to support the fast-tracking of the project.

The commitment to construct the Olympic-size swimming pool was reached following a meeting between Governor Ndeti and Machakos School Alumni Association (MSAA) Management Committee which visited the Governor at her office last week.

The swimming pool project at the school, founded in 1939, has been in limbo since 1969, when students, including former Makueni Governor Prof Kivutha Kibwana, participated in a walk from the school to Nairobi to raise funds for the construction.

Former Machakos Governor Dr Alfred Mutua made earlier commitments to help construct the swimming pool project.

During the meeting with the MSAA Management Committee, led by the Chairman, Justice (Rtd) Philip Waki, Governor Ndeti reaffirmed the County Government of Machakos’s commitment to help by providing excavators and other earthmoving equipment to dig up the superstructure for the swimming pool.

A borehole will simultaneously be drilled on-site to provide the water necessary for the swimming pool project.

It was agreed that although the county has not commenced the manufacture of cabro-tiles as envisaged, arrangements will be made to provide cabro-tiles for the pool surface area and walkways.

A committee comprising MSAA representatives, the county executive, and the school administration will be formed to coordinate the technical and other aspects of the swimming pool works, as discussed.

The committee chair said in a briefing to the alumni that the Governor also agreed to be one of the chief guests during a major fundraising event for the project to be held on June 28, 2025.

School Principal Benson Manoo also met with the Governor the same day.

There has been fresh impetus for old boys to re-unite and spearhead various initiatives at the school, including environmental conservation and student mentorship.
