On November 15, 2024, ahead of the G20 Leaders Summit in Rio de Janeiro, a coalition of governments, multilateral development banks, UN agencies and major philanthropic organizations announced an ambitious initiative to double the reach of school meal programmes in low and lower middle income countries by 2030.
This announcement is part of the upcoming launch of the Global Alliance Against Poverty and Hunger, a pivotal role under Brazil’s presidency of G20 to combat hunger and poverty worldwide.
The initiative targets providing school meals to 150 million children, more than twice the current number in these countries. By ensuring every child in school receives at least one nutritious meal daily, the programme aims to address childhood hunger while boosting access to education and improving learning outcomes.
