Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges can now sigh in relief after the government finally disbursed capitation funds to the institutions.
Speaking to Education News, a number of Chief Principals and Principals of a number of colleges in the North Rift and Lake Region confirmed receipt of the funds.
Some of them however expressed concerns that the government has disbursed Ksh3,500 per student instead of the expected Ksh7,500 which is normally sent to the institutions.
The low funds mean that TVET institutions will continue to grapple with how to deal with fresh students who have been reporting.
Kenya Association of Technical Training Institutions (KATTI) Lake Region Chairperson Daniel Randa noted that some institutions had received the funds while others had not yet secured them.
Randa said the funds are usually disbursed in bits and asked for patience from the affected colleges.
Most TVETS have been operating on shoestring budgets for the better part of last year and this year but TVET PS Esther Muoria brought hope after she announced that the money would be released soon during a meeting with TVET heads in Kisumu.
A number of colleges had not paid workers with several institutions being at the mercy of suppliers in addition to suspending co-curricular activities.
