More girls submitted abstracts to this year’s Young Scientists Kenya (YSK) exhibition compared to their male counterparts, YSK National Director Dr. Victor Mwongera has stated.

Speaking during the exhibition, which was held at the Edge Convention Centre in South C, Nairobi, Dr. Mwongera noted that girls’ turn-up stood at 54 per cent of the 1,780 abstract submissions.

“The increasing involvement of young girls in technology is not just a trend but a testament to the untapped potential of their innovative minds in shaping a better future, we hope that the trend continues in the coming years as in past years this has not been the case,” he said.

The exhibition, which ends today, brought together students and teachers drawn from across the country, with more than 200 students and over 100 teachers presenting their projects in person with an additional 1,300 students joining virtually.

The Director also acknowledged and lauded the collaborative spirit that underpinned many of the projects on display.

“By working together, these students are learning to share ideas, experiment, and push the boundaries of what is possible. This environment fosters a culture of innovation, empowering them to develop solutions that can make a real impact on their communities and the world at large,” he added.

The exhibition kicked of on August 19 and was co-hosted by YSK and the National Research Fund (NRF).

YSK is an initiative of the Ministry of Education (MoE) and the Government of Ireland through its Embassy in Kenya. It provides young people from across Kenya with an opportunity to demonstrate innovation and showcase their scientific talents through the National Science and Technology competition.
