Girls outnumber boys in 2024 KCSE examinations

Releasing KCSE exam results today, Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Migos has said that 1892 more girls than boys sat for KCSE last year which many Kenyans view as better tidings for the girl child.

“In 2024 KCSE we have witnessed 482,202 female candidates seating for the examination compared to 480,310 male candidates representing 50.1 per cent and 49.9 per cent,” said the CS.

He said that counties in Kenya which have increase the number of female candidates who sat for 2024 KCSE are Vihiga by 51 per cent, Elgeyo Marakwet by 56 per cent compared to 41 per cent in 2023, Meru by 51 per cent compared to 48 per cent in 2023, Kiambu by 52 per cent compared to 47 per cent in 2023, Nairobi by 52 per cent compared to 47 per cent in 2023, Kisii by 52 per cent compared to 47 per cent in 2023, Kitui by 51 per cent compared to 48 per cent in 2023,Trans Nzoia by 51 per cent compared to 48 per cent in 2023, Kwale by 53 per cent compared to 46 per cent in 2023.

Other counties which registered more female candidates in 2024 KCSE are Isiolo County by 52 per cent compare to 47 per cent in 2023 KCSE, Tharaka Nithi County by 52per cent compared to 47 per cent in 2023, Kakamega by 51 per cent compared to 48 per cent in 2023 and Uasin Gishu County by 51 per cent compared to 48 per cent in 2023 KCSE.

Counties which registered more male candidates than female candidates in 2024 KCSE are Garissa by 62.8 per cent compared to 37.1 per cent in 2023, Mandera by 63.3 per cent compared to 36 per cent previous year, Wajir by 60.2 per cent compared to 39 per cent in 2023. Turkana County had 59 per cent compared to 40.6 per cent in 2023, Samburu by 53.1 per cent compared to 46 per cent in 2023 and Narok had 62 per cent compare to 48 per cent in 2023.

Other counties which registered more boys than girls in the 2024 KCSE examinations are Homa Bay County by 52 per cent compared to 47 per cent in 2023, West Pokot by 53.5 per cent compared to 46 per cent in 2023, Mombasa by 51 per cent compared to 48.8 per cent in 2023, Migori by 51 per cent compared to 48 per cent in 2023, Embu by 51 per cent compared to 48.9 per cent in 2023, Kisumu by 51 per cent compared to 48 per cent in 2023, Nyamira by 51.3 per cent compared to 48.6 per cent in 2023 and Bungoma by 51.6 per cent compared with 48.6 per cent in 2023.

The CS said both boys and girls should be empowered to get quality education in all learning institutions in the country.

He added that the government will address all obstacles that hinder girls to access education like early marriage, early pregnancy among child labour.

He also said that likewise all obstacles that hinder boys like drug abuse, child labour, and other will be addressed by the government to ensure they get education for a brighter future.
