The Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has stepped in to reconcile Ministry of Education (MoE) and TSC over persistent wars on proposed education reforms.

Speaking on Wednesday March 27, the Deputy President asked the MoE and the TSC to establish a technical team to lead implementation of the recommendations of the Presidential Working Party on the Education Reform (PWPEP).

Speaking during a meeting with the leadership of the MoE and TSC at his official residence in Karen, Nairobi, the DP said parallel reforms by the two agencies is counterproductive.

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua (fourth right) Cabinet Secretary for Education Ezekiel Machogu (third right), Principal Secretary for Basic Education Dr Belio Kipsang (third left), TSC CEO Nancy Macharia (right) among others education officials hold a prayer today morning, when Deputy President chaired a meeting between MoE and TSC on implementation of recommendations of the Presidential Working Party on Education Reform.

Gachagua said the technical team will lead in the establishment of common strategy of coming up with the respective mandates and needs of the MoE and TSC and other stakeholders.

“We are one country, one people, one government, and our children are one. We need to establish a committee to lead the process,” DP said.

Gachagua called upon TSC and the MoE to work together even though the two are separated constitutionally.

“The President William Ruto appointed the PWPEP, which submitted its report and he accepted the recommendations. We have to work together in implementation. The MoE and TSC are working separately and this won’t help. A parallel approach does not augur well with the intended purpose of reforms,” Gachagua said.

The Deputy President said that the Government committed 30 per cent of the budget to the MoE, making it an important sector in the country thus the State cannot afford to get it wrong.  He added that there is success in people working together by putting their divergent opinions aside.

The Education CS said that the ministry is ready to work with the TSC in realizing reforms that respond to the development needs of the country.

Leaders deliberate.

“We are one education sector and delivering the reforms needs coordination, hence need for the technical team,” CS said.

Machogu added that their collaboration will hasten the processing of requisite procedures, cabinet memos and other documents like sessional papers that require concurrence.

The Chairperson of TSC Jamleck Muturi supported the proposal of the DP and the CS Machogu adding that it will be helpful min harmonising the implementation process of the education reforms.

After the deliberations, it was agreed that the names of the technical team be submitted within a week and work to commence immediately.
