Former Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) leaders in Gusii region have formed an association to cater for their social and financial needs.

The group’s Secretary Jimo Martin, former Gucha branch Executive Secretary, said that with their social and economic status shrinking, they saw it wise to form a welfare association where they will also share ideas regarding various aspects of their lives.

The group – Retired KNUT Leaders Association (RKLA) – has started recruiting members from Kisii and Nyamira counties and will expand to other counties and become a national outfit.

“We started in our small way and intend to extend the membership to the rest of the country,” he said.

Martin said that another of the group’s main objectives is to also mentor young teachers.

Treasurer and former Kisii Central branch Executive Secretary, Shem Nyaundi, noted that teaching is a noble profession whose integrity should be upheld.

He said that the association, which started with 40 members, also aims at raising money to establish a sinking fund that will be used to build decent homes for members.

Chairman Victor Nyangaya, former Nyamira Treasurer, said that members will be allowed to borrow money without interest.

To ensure sustenance of the group, he said that they will venture into income-generating activities including agriculture, real estate and hospitality.
