Bethwell Allan Ogot, who served as Chancellor of Moi Univesity, has died at the age of 95, his family has confirmed.
The professor died at a Kisumu hospital today morning following a short illness.
Ogot was the Chancellor of Moi University up to early 2013 and he is also a celebrated historian, academic, and intellectual giant.
Born in 1929 is a Kenyan historian and eminent African scholar whose works focused on African history, research methods and theory.

Siaya Governor James Orengo has eulogised him as greatest scholar whose contribution to the academic world was immense.
“Prof Bethwel Ogot is one of the greatest scholars of our time. He has left a legacy of seminal works and historical treatises. A true thinker and intellectual par excellence. He now “belongs to the ages”. Rest in eternal peace,” Governor Orengo Facebook post reads.
On his part Migori Governor Ochilo Ayacko eulogized the late Ogot saying “Prof Bethwel Allan Ogot was a towering historian and scholar, leaving behind a rich legacy of knowledge. His vast collection of books, archives and artifacts reflects his lifelong dedication to history. Rest in Peace, Professor.”
