First Lady Rachel Ruto has urged African leaders to increase investment in school feeding programmes, underscoring their critical role in shaping the continents’ future.
Speaking at Kaptembwa Primary School in Nakuru during World Children’s Day celebrations, Ruto highlighted the profound impact of providing learners with daily nutritious meals, linking proper nutrition to academic success and long term development.
Kenya currently feeds 2.5 million children daily but aims to expand the initiative to 7.5 million by 2028, with a target of 10 million by 2030.
Ruto called on county governments and members of Parliament to allocate more resources towards these efforts, framing school feeding programmes as an investment in Africa’s prosperity.

Her advocacy extends beyond funding: She promoted initiatives such as kitchen gardens and fruit farms in schools to boost sustainability and address hunger.
