Foreigners arrested for issuing fake PhD, Masters degrees after three-day training

The four were running illegal university.

Four individuals have been arrested and charged with issuing illegitimate Master’s and PhD degrees and running an unaccredited university.

The four, two of whom were foreign nationals, were apprehended by detectives from Bamburi Police Station at the bogus institution in the White Sands Hotel in Mombasa.

According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI), the suspects, Dayis Lawrence Bennett (American citizen), Farah Akab (Pakistani national), Ekra Ndung’u, and Josephine Ndune, were apprehended while issuing certifications to three-day learners.

“The award ceremony for the degrees was effectively halted when the gumshoes barged in and whisked the offenders away. Some of the fraudulently awarded degrees include three Master of Business Administration (Leadership and Management) and two PhDs in Leadership (Hon. Causa),” said DCI.

Following the arrest, the quartet were arraigned before Shanzu Law Courts where they faced charges of Conferring Degrees without Accreditation of Foreign Universities contrary to Section 28(2) as read with Section 5 of the Universities Act.

They pleaded not guilty to charges levelled against them and were released on Ksh.400,000 bond with a surety of the same or a cash bail of Ksh.300,000.

The court also retained the passports of the two foreigners. The case will be mentioned on February 18, 2025.
